Poetry

Too little too late
Nothing at all
Gaps of kindness
Throw it into
A free fall
Once the words are spoken
The look of disregard
Neglect, failure to see
It can blast a chasm so wide
Or erode a natural bridge
Meant to uphold many feet
Back turns
Door locks
Key thrown into the canyon or buried at sea
Knowing the truth sets you free
Once you have walked away
Looking back holds no possibility

Where are my people
Among whom I feel at peace
Free to be fully myself
Understood implicitly
Belonging in their midst
Even in differences
Where are my people Oh God?
I have lived among many groups
I have observed the ways
Adapted and been outside circles impossible to go in more than a pace
It’s not only them saying “You are not from around here”,
“We don’t understand who you are”, ”
“You are not good enough, or you are too good, for us.”
To accept you authentically would mean
We would have to stop being struck down or stuck up.
It is the culture, the customs, the ideals, subtle and wide, that separate the human family from hearts bonding Divinely.
When can I rest among those of my kind?
In a world where some move and many stay
To be entrenched alone among old generations
I feel for the immigrant, the outsider, the foreigner in the midst
Who is never allowed to quite fit even if they join and serve and give
My people are Your people, yet,
There are still veils, layers and walls unable to be scaled
Is this Your way Oh God, part of Your plan
To make those left in the outer court long for heaven?
Show me where you are in this deportation, on the path of Gypsies and Pilgrims and those displaced
Show me where You are on this trail of tears, You who were outcast, despised and shut out by your peers

Can time tear the heart from it’s mooring
Life’s weariness break the bonds of an intentional love story
Is there rest when ripping winds
Pull through the sails, the bow bending
Waves come across so stern
Voices of moments past crying out
Good times and bad all merge in chorus
Will the memories hold together against tides relentlessness
The salty water of prayer filled tears fall on the deck
Preserving the lives of those on the ship
When it leans again into the break
Still intact
The passengers clinging to the mast
Holding on below
Praying that hull won’t crack
Sick on the sea sometimes
The ride is rough
Then from the midst of the tempest
Comes the voice of peace
Saying “Be still, Divine love can calm the wildest sea.”

Wanna write my own story sometimes
Leave out the sad
Make it all happy
Erase the chapters where things turn bad
Leave off the parts where human frailty causes suffering and pain
Get to that fairy tale ending without all the trouble and strain
Letting life unfold in dramatic detail is unnerving, suspenseful,
The struggle is real
After bitter they say can come sweet
If you root out the feelings that seek to take you underneath
No ones life is in their own control
No matter how much money or power or beauty they hold
A wonderful life means learning to suffer well
To overcome the many negatives common to all
Even if we could fully manage
ourselves
Do every little thing perfect
We can never do that to anyone else
Our lives depend on relationships
That live and breathe
Some die, or change or fail miserably
Living in Joy and Peace requires rebound and commitment to release
Being able to let go, let God, get on, not give up
It takes skill and love, being both tender and tough
No one can write their tale end to beginning
The plot twists will come just from living

To know you are loved

To be secure and safe from threat of harm or violation

To be known and to know others deeply in truth

To be real and authentic about where you are on the journey

To trust

To be trusted

To be allowed to mature at the proper pace

To find acceptance in weakness

To be encouraged to grow

To learn to thrive

To share wisdom and grow in grace

To keep company with both the strong and the weak

To have enough and be willing to share

To work with diligence in the areas you are called

To pour out goodness and kindness from a filled heart

To abide in peace that defies understanding

To act with compassion towards the undeserving

To acknowledge your need to both give and receive all of these
To take time to rest and receive restoration.
To love and acknowledge God’s proper place in life

Because each is a piece of wholeness
Love’s energy pushes us beyond survival

Being in a connected relationship with the Creator of all

Formed through the gift of sacrifice and grace offered freely

While engaging in bonded ties with those who are also created

To be loved and known and treated with esteem

This is the full life God desires and designed for us

It is for all of this that God came to show us how to live and love

This is what Jesus longs to give to us

This is what we should aspire to liveImage

We build our houses of brick and steel
Glass and doors with locks as shields
Structures as fortresses to hold us safe
Yet there is a sweetness to sleeping in tents in fields
With the simplest of needs met and fresh air and open space surrounding us
Removed from the drudge of keeping up appearances
Filling our lungs and clearing our minds from the clutter of maintaining
Our home place we fill with possessions and comforts
Then we spend all our time fighting to protect and shuffle them
Position brings security, we climb another level our money keeping us afloat like a battleship
In a minute our neighbors could be the wolves at the door
Be they near, or far, shifting to tip the world in their favor
The pressure of life to compete and change, diversify our portfolios, stay in the game
We fight the fear of having to live in a tent or a small space where life is basic
Yet the minute we can, many run and escape to it

Life is a mix of happy and sad

Sometimes just walking through the market you meet

Them both and they seem to slap your face

While grasping each other’s hands

Recovering from the dumps and keeping a joyful

Temperament

Is the mysterious formula we must find to succeed to

Avoid lingering too long in lament

To manage the stressors and true hard breaks

Return our souls to the center of joy

In the face of difficulty and pain and toil

Sorrow cannot always be avoided

Nor trouble eliminated

No matter how many management techniques we use to

Try to escape it

Finding the way to be content and at peace

Amidst the struggle and heartbreak

Daily grinding us towards defeat

Keeping eyes fixed on the promise

When the aches are real

When the little foxes in the vineyard

Nip away and seek to steal

Hope spring eternal

Love overcome

Yet be true to express the sadness

So healing’s arms can warm us up

Honesty is a step on the staircase to wholeness

Sharing the burden is the design meant to enfold
