We build our houses of brick and steel
Glass and doors with locks as shields
Structures as fortresses to hold us safe
Yet there is a sweetness to sleeping in tents in fields
With the simplest of needs met and fresh air and open space surrounding us
Removed from the drudge of keeping up appearances
Filling our lungs and clearing our minds from the clutter of maintaining
Our home place we fill with possessions and comforts
Then we spend all our time fighting to protect and shuffle them
Position brings security, we climb another level our money keeping us afloat like a battleship
In a minute our neighbors could be the wolves at the door
Be they near, or far, shifting to tip the world in their favor
The pressure of life to compete and change, diversify our portfolios, stay in the game
We fight the fear of having to live in a tent or a small space where life is basic
Yet the minute we can, many run and escape to it

Life is a mix of happy and sad

Sometimes just walking through the market you meet

Them both and they seem to slap your face

While grasping each other’s hands

Recovering from the dumps and keeping a joyful

Temperament

Is the mysterious formula we must find to succeed to

Avoid lingering too long in lament

To manage the stressors and true hard breaks

Return our souls to the center of joy

In the face of difficulty and pain and toil

Sorrow cannot always be avoided

Nor trouble eliminated

No matter how many management techniques we use to

Try to escape it

Finding the way to be content and at peace

Amidst the struggle and heartbreak

Daily grinding us towards defeat

Keeping eyes fixed on the promise

When the aches are real

When the little foxes in the vineyard

Nip away and seek to steal

Hope spring eternal

Love overcome

Yet be true to express the sadness

So healing’s arms can warm us up

Honesty is a step on the staircase to wholeness

Sharing the burden is the design meant to enfold

We all wanna help the poor
As long as we can stay rich
Happy to cross the tracks to spend the day
Or the week or an adventurous year
Take photos of building wells or cleaning a wound
Learn enough language to safely consume the best local food
Read a book to orphans and kids living as slaves to the streets
Head back to our indoor plumbing
Universities with state of the art fitness facilities
Corporations partner in uneven exchange with people growing seeds in developing economies and finishing the edges of our jeans
While we eat the finest wheat and organic beef
Closets filled with entire garment districts and novelties
Every consumer wants those goods cheap
We give a little in the plate to provide starving people with beans and watery maize
To keep the competition in the earth chugging to feed all our pleasures on the backs of the poor living beneath the lines
We never want to fall below
We all wanna help the poor as long as we can stay rich
Sacrifice sounds noble as long as it doesn’t hurt our bottom line
Eating the rich is not the answer to kindness to the poor who will always be
It comes down to opening the heart and mind to true generosity
Knowing when enough becomes too much
Reaching down deep and saying no to one more thing for self
Giving a hand up and even sometimes a hand out to the millions reaching for a little more dignity

Complex conveniences

Upward mobility

Separated families

National fragility

We look for more

We long for less

The new things existence

Drives constant discontentment

Modern problems

Working so hard to relax

Driven to distraction

Simple living seems hard to capture

Each new object

To set our affections

Places to go

Never ending attractions

Be and do and see and explore

The eyes of man are never satisfied

They lust for more

And more and more

Chasing wind

Pushing ahead

Exploring exploration

Is there anything left?

Taste refines

Expenses rise

Comforts lure can draw compromise

Is the quiet life possible

In the endless big top show

Opting out seems out of reach

The claws of modernity’s seep

Grasp us all, brings us to our knees
